Traversing Venice of the East: Udaipur!

Placed within the Aravalli ranges, Udaipur is known as the 'Venice of the East'/ 'Kashmir of Rajasthan'. It was the capital of The Mewar Kingdom and is surrounded by beautiful and enormous lakes that are not only a tourist attraction but also a major source of water to the city. Lake City as it is famously known consists of five major lakes, namely, Fateh Sagar Lake, Pichola Lake, Swaroop Sagar, Rang Sagar and Doodh Talai Lake. This city also houses the Jaisamand Lake, the largest artificial lake in Asia.

This post aims to be your guide as to where and how you can have a great experience travelling to Udaipur!

A road trip to Udaipur is just what you need during the winters (the perfect time to be in Udaipur).
I started my road trip from Bhopal. Yeah! from the city of lakes to the lake city! Sounds fun, right? It is!

Remember the scene from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani? Where Naina says to Bunny "Jitna Bhi try Karo life mein Kuch Na Kuch to chutega hi, to Jahan Hain wahi ka maza lete hain".Right from the moment I watched this movie, I had an urge to visit Udaipur. By following my blog you know that my travels always have a story behind it. Yes, they do and here is one among them.

Watching the movie and a bit of research done on my part, I was convinced that Udaipur was much about lakes and palaces. But trust me it is more than that! We planned our stay in Udaipur for 2 days after which we left back for Bhopal!

Places to visit!

1. City Palace

If you are a great fan of architecture, you are in the right place! Placed right in the front of Lake Pichola, City Palace is a major tourist attraction in Udaipur. Apart from its architecture, it is also famous for the market which is known for its handmade crafts and arts. You might end up taking a couple of hours going through the entire palace. Also, Manek Chowk inside the city palace is known for destination weddings.

2. Saheliyon Ki Bari

Saheliyon Ki Bari is a garden and another major tourist attraction. It was laid for a group of forty-eight young women attendants who accompanied a princess to Udaipur as part of her dowry. The gardens set below the embankment of the Fateh Sagar Lake have beautiful lotus pools, marble pavilions and elephant-shaped fountains. These fountains are fed by the water of the lake gushing through ducts made for the purpose. The interesting fact about the fountains is that they do not have any pumps or technology used for making them functional. It is pure science that was used at that time to make them work. You will be shocked to know even in the 17th century the King himself assisted the workers to construct it in such a way that it uses gravity for the fountains to work.

3. Fateh Sagar Lake

It is an artificial lake named after Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur and Mewar, constructed north-west of Udaipur, to the north of Lake Pichola in the 1680s. The lake is surrounded by beautiful mountains which makes it so attractive to see during the sunset. It also features a boat ride, between the three islands, which includes Nehru Park, which itself is a tourist attraction. The second island houses a public park with an impressive water-jet fountain and the third island is the address for the Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO). You can also experience jet skiing if you love adventure.

4. Sajjangarh Fort/ Monsoon Palace

This palace is the most serene place you will find around Udaipur, away from the crowd, the palace is situated above the hill between the Aravalli ranges and is quite famous for its enticing view of the sunset, a bit spooky though, but you will love the place for its stillness and the view. It is the same place which was shown in the movie featuring a sunset.

Other things to try in Udaipur:

1. Bagore ki Haveli.
2. Jagdish Temple.
3. Karni Mata Temple.
4. Jaisamand Lake.

A delight for foodies!

Udaipur offers you dainty, lip-smacking, desi delicacies ranging from the simplest khichdi to an elaborate, authentic Rajasthani thali including dal bati churma. Street food like kachoris, samosas, and poha too are quite delicious to gorge in. The sweets are prepared in pure desi ghee the taste and fragrance of which lingers for hours.

Where did I stay?

Hotel Inder Prakash- Located opposite to the Fateh Sagar Lake, it is a low on the budget yet a good one for the leisure travellers. It features a beautiful rooftop restaurant and has and offers some delicious food! The rooms are moreover built with a royal architecture featuring king size beds and lanterns to give the rooms a retro look!
